Today marks the one year death anniversary of the patriarch of the Josue family. This great man's lessons live on through his seven children, thirteen grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

After Tatay's passing, my Nanay opened up his closet for his grandchildren to take any piece of clothing that we wished for. Since I already love to wear big, baggy, "grandpa" sweaters, I was delighted at the idea of owning the 'real' thing. How deliciously hipster. I have only worn his sweaters one or two times. It's an odd feeling to know that it has been washed and yet I still feel like it smells like him. Wearing it feels like I'm wearing a piece of armour - like I can feel his love protecting me.

About a year ago, an idea popped into my mind to take a picture of my Tatay's and Nanay's hands. I thought it would be a nice gift for my entire family and, selfishly, I felt it would give me a part of him to keep forever. During the short photo shoot, I panicked that I didn't get the shot I imagined so clearly in my mind. But, it was while I started to edit that I quickly realized that this very important person created the most important and impactful photograph of my life. I'm not sure I will ever be able to top this photo, and to be frank, I would be perfectly happy if I am not able to. I am proud to have it hanging in my home - reminding me of the value of family, the importance of hard work, and the power of unconditional love.
